COUPLES & MARRIAGE COUNSELING IN SAN DIEGO & ACROSS CALIFORNIA

When faith is part of your relationship, it belongs in the therapy room.

Christian couples counseling at Common Ground Therapy Group — research-based therapy that makes room for the beliefs, values, and shared faith that shape your relationship.

Your faith isn't a side note. It belongs in the room.

For many couples, faith runs through the biggest questions a marriage holds — how you handle conflict, what you owe each other, how you make decisions, what you're building toward. When those questions come up in counseling, you shouldn't have to translate them into secular terms or leave them at the door.

Our Christian couples work is grounded in the same two research-based approaches we use with every couple — Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and the Gottman Method — while making room for the faith that informs how you love, forgive, and stay committed. This is licensed clinical therapy, not pastoral counseling. The difference is that your beliefs are treated as a resource you bring to the work, not something set aside for it.

You set the terms of how faith shows up. For some couples that means grounding the work in shared values around covenant, forgiveness, and commitment. For others it means working through a season where faith itself has become part of what you're navigating together. We meet you where you are — including when the two of you hold faith a little differently.

Shared values, practical tools — Communication and conflict skills that fit the marriage you're actually trying to build.

Navigating hard seasons — Steady support through the ruptures, transitions, and disappointments that test a committed relationship.

Faith and difference — A grounded place to work when partners are at different points in their faith, or holding it in different ways.

Preparing for marriage — Faith-integrated premarital counseling built around the SYMBIS assessment, for couples getting ready to begin. (More on this below.)

What this looks like in practice:

Christian Couples Counseling can help you…

Communicate more clearly — Say what you mean, hear what your partner means, and get to the real conversation faster.

Navigate conflict as a team — Learn research-based tools for handling disagreement without damage.

Root the work in what you value — Bring your faith and shared commitments into the room instead of around them.

Prepare well for marriage — Start your marriage with insight into each other and practical tools for the years ahead.

Premarital counseling with SYMBIS

If you're preparing for marriage, we offer premarital counseling built around SYMBIS — Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts — one of the most widely used premarital assessments in the country. As a certified SYMBIS facilitator, Melanie will guide you through it together.

You'll each complete the assessment online — about thirty minutes — and it maps your personalities, communication and conflict styles, approach to money and intimacy, and more. Then we walk through your personalized results together and turn them into practical tools for marriage, with room for the faith and values you're building on. It's a thoughtful, honest way to start a marriage: not with a checklist, but with real understanding of each other.

ABOUT MELANIE WOLF, LMFT

Christian couples counseling at Common Ground Therapy Group is offered by Melanie Wolf, LMFT #124745, the practice's founder and clinical supervisor. Her clinical work draws on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the Gottman Method, and years of work with couples navigating the full arc of committed life.

Alongside her clinical license, Melanie's background includes pastoral training and spiritual direction — formation that lets her hold faith fluently within therapy rather than treating it as separate from the work. She brings to this work not only clinical training but the lived experience of a long marriage of nearly three decades and raising a family of four children. She does this work as someone who knows, firsthand, that a good marriage is built over time — through seasons, effort, and grace.

Christian couples counseling is a clinical service, not pastoral counseling or a substitute for the pastoral care of your church community. Your free 15-minute consultation confirms the fit before you begin.
